Sleepless in South Carolina

I have trouble sleeping or more to the point I have trouble staying asleep at night. I often joke
with my friends that I should start a 2:00 a.m. baby feeding business since I am awake anyway!
Mind you, if I sit down quietly to meditate or reflect on my day or even to read...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I am a goner. A few things I do to entertain myself at 2:00 or 3:00 a.m:

clean house - except for vacuuming, do laundry, read, play on the computer, eat something (bad, bad) knit, stare out the windows, tease the cat, get mad because my husband can sleep through a hurricane, take a bath, paint my toenails, look at wrinkles and pluck facial hairs after said bath. Make grand and glorious plans. Read cookbooks. Look at magazines. Rummage through the pantry...clean out the pantry or refridgerator, make new lists of healthy foods to buy...channel surf

The channel surfing can be hazardous to your well being...pretty bizarre stuff going on at that time of morning or you can BUY stuff...shopping from your couch at 3 o clock in the morning...
did I mention I purchased a complete set of exercise dvds and a sewing machine? I haven't used either one yet and it has been quite sometime since ordering. The "Sham Wow" intrigues me as does any number of kitchen gadgets. I am a sucker for kitchen gadgetry and cleaning products.

My brain likes to play gymnastics during frequent bouts of insomnia which is probably what led to the insomnia in the first place. I cannot remember where I put my keys or what I wore yesterday, however I can remember every slight injustice from middle school. Or every silly mistake or bad decision I have ever made in my entire 50 years of living.

My best sleeping time is about 5:30 a.m. I am just getting some really good sleep...when the alarm clock goes off...

Do you sleep well? If not, what do you do to entertain yourself in the wee hours?

I've found that is the perfect prayer time. No interruptions, for one thing. My sister has a placque, something like, If you can't sleep, don't count sheep, talk to the Shepherd.

I hardly sleep well.
Math helps. I.E. trying to figure out what's a better deal with coupons and doing the percentage off the regular price. Or, figuring out the cost per meal and per person for dinner.
Also, try thinking of all the things you could be doing instead of being sleepless, that helps too :)

OOOh!! Connie - we just got cable (I KNOW, I CANNOT BELIEVE IT TOO) - long story short, my husband's work is paying for our cable modem, so we had to get cable. Any excuse, huh>? ANYWAY - I JUST SAW THE SHAMWOW COMMERCIAL!!! Can you tell how excited i am about it??! John thinks it is just the same chamois you can buy at any Home Depot, but I am convinced it is SPECIAL. BOY - that and the PedEgg. I am DYING to get that one and test it out on john's enormous heel callouses. Of course, he says NO TO BOTH. Party pooper.

@dishy: despite popular belief, the ped-egg is simply a glorified cheese grater. i own one. it does nothing except grate my heels. you can buy lots of the 'as seen on tv' stuff at bed, bath, and beyond--with a 20% off coupon--sham-wows included!

@connie: i haven't slept straight through the night since we had a small fire in our house in august 2007. yeah...that pretty much ruined sleep for me. i get up 2 or 3 times a night just to sniff around and make sure everything's okay. i don't go to bed until midnight or later...and husban-dito gets up at 5:30...no wonder i'm always such a crank. hahaha.

Connie, I just wrote this long post full of great ideas, but wordpress wouldn't let me post it...said I didn't own that identity. Is that what happens when you don't use your account for nearly two weeks? I'm going to try again.

Ah, it worked. The earlier, longer post suggested cottage cheese, cashews, turkey, and a boring book.

Well I'm pretty sure my sleepless nights are just beginning! But I can say that those Sham-Wows work better than any towel I've ever seen! When we have soda spills at my work, you have to scream "Sham-Wow" before quickly throwing the ugly, orange, extra-absorbent towel over the mess! Makes cleaning less of a drag, ha!

When I'm pregnant, I don't sleep well at all. And it's frightening what your mind comes up with at 5:00 a.m. Everything seems brilliant. Everything.

Clean the house, HOLLA! I've done that more times than I can count.

Actually, now when I have insomnia (and it is less frequent than it used to be dangit) I cuddle up with my quilt and daydream.

I can fly, I look fabulous, I'm in Fiji, I right wrongs, did I mention I look fabulous? Sometimes, I'm upset because I feel asleep before my daydream is over!

One of the things I do is listen to an audio book for a while. It's like having someone read me a story and helps me relax.

Or if I'm awake because something is bothering me, I'll journal it out.
